Launch of Hazel Mc Intyre's New Book
20th October 2000
"Echoes of Another Time" by Hazel Mc Intyre :

The McIntyre Family

Nothing less than the launch of a new book 'Echoes of Another Time' from local author Hazel McIntyre could motivate the people of Inishowen and abroad to attend in their hundreds. On the evening of 20th October 2000 they came from far & wide to the launch in Mc.Grory's of Culdaff to wish her good luck and buy copies of this intriguing book.

Wonderful food was provided by Mc.Grory's restaurant and music played by the 'Inishowen Traditional Music Project' who gave a spirited opening to the evenings entertainment.

The welcoming speech from local author and historian Sean Beatty acknowledged Hazel's well wishers including such distinguished persons as John & Pat Hume, John de Chastelain, Brian Friel and her many friends in New Brunswick. One notable dignitary who thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the attentions of the guests; was Hazel and Charles' young grandson Darragh.

The guest speaker of the evening Dr. Paddy Fitzgerald; when called upon to speak gave a poignant, entertaining and humorous talk to his assembled listeners. Dr Fitzgerald is the Lecturer and Development officer for Migration Studies UFAP who developed his speech from his insights of the famine times and depth of historical knowledge with great understanding, humour and wit. One memorable quote from the eminent man as he spoke of Hazel's book, "Echoes of Another Time gives us the verse", 'to those who stayed, those who left, even the few who returned' evoked a thoughtful hush from his rapt audience.

Hazel McIntyre then spoke with sincere feeling about the personal experiences and research from which the book evolved. In closing, she thanked her husband Charles Clarke for his support and encouragement, Dr. Paddy Fitzgerald for his knowledgeable contribution to her research and local author, historian, and teacher Sean Beatty "for his Inspiration and achievements" and Mc.Grory's for their outstanding hospitality.

Hazel personally signed many books at the launch as she chatted with the heartfelt ease and charm that endears her to the people of Inishowen; who bought in most cases more than one copy of her book for themselves, friends and future generations, a sure sign of its necessity, popularity and continued success.

Hazel meeting her readers

Hazel McIntyre in 'Echoes of Another Time' has magically captured and amplified the faint memories and voices of those who have departed to tell their stories at this crucial time when the relevance of old ways, older generations, history and local characters is fast being forgotten. The relevance of 'Echoes of Another Time' will serve as a reminder as to how life was lived in the past with simplicity, resilience, and humour to a new generation.

Kavanagh Brothers fronted by Patsy Kavanagh

The main evenings entertainment was provided by Dominic McDaid and the Kavanagh Brothers fronted by Patsy Kavanagh; who is no stranger to those who enjoy his wonderful voice and quiet charm as he sings songs of Donegal and Ireland.

We at Donegal Internet wish Hazel every continued success with her book and wish to thank her insofar as no matter how busy her schedule she always manages to contribute to her page on the Inishowen website www.carndonagh.com
